How Rude! began as a response to editorials about the lack of civility
in society and to reports that employers want socially competent
employees. The reports specifically said that if two applicants
are equal, many employers take them to lunch or dinner to see who
has the better manners. So our curriculum is a combination of diversity
training, cultural awareness, table and other social etiquette,
and understanding today's employment picture.
There are about 40 total class hours. The curriculum addresses
life skills needed for success as adults. The seven lessons are
taught through field trips, short lecture, discussion, homework,
learn-by-doing activities, and guest resource people. Examples are
breakfast with an employer panel to discuss work expectations; field
trip to the Japanese Institute in Spokane and the Native American
Salish Pow Wow; hosting a dinner for potential employers in Pend
Oreille county; learning table-setting and celebrating at a formal
luncheon.
From the life skills wheel (WSU Extension has adapted this from
Iowa State) the social skills to learn are greeting others; using
good manners; cultural competence and comfort; engaging in conversation;
showing respect and consideration; table manners.
Objectives of How Rude! are to speak with confidence and use eye
contact with potential employers; increase comfort level with other
cultures; have a better understanding of other cultures; know appropriate
attire for specific occasions; carry on appropriate conversation;
eat with manners; serve the meal by recommended etiquette; set the
table properly; give proper introductions.
Overall goal is to increase the employability of teens.
